Transmission and Distribution Systems Expansion Planning

Introduction

The research line “Transmission and Distribution Systems Expansion Planning” aims at creating software for transmission and sub-transmission networks expansion planning of large-scale hydrothermal systems.

This research line has been developing this kind of software since 2002 in order to facilitate and enrich the planner’s decision making process by results from electric power simulations of yearly configurations considering hydrothermal scenarios of interest.

PLANTAC (Transmission Planning with Reliability Worth) is an example of software that has been developed in this research line. One goal of this research line is to maintain the software updated, ready to use and compatible with other Cepel’s software for electric power analysis.

PLANTAC takes an expansion plan prepared by the user as a reference, which contains a set of chosen expansions to be included within the study horizon (reference plan). Then, it submits changes in the reference plan and checks the validity and attractiveness of the alternative plans thus obtained, through AC analyses performed by Cepel´s ANAREDE (power flow), FLUPOT (optimal power flow) and NH2 (reliability analysis). The software allows performing several off line analyses by the major entities involved in transmission and sub-transmission planning, including comparisons of candidate plans, reinforcements’ delay and prioritization. Yearly, detailed information are produced such as Merit Order index, reliability indices, power losses, investment cost and operation cost.

This research line also aims at making agents of the power sector aware of the importance of using probabilistic and reliability criteria in grid expansion studies.

Developed in partnership with the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE), this research line is related to the following research lines: “Generation and Transmission Reliability” and “Analysis of Networks in Permanent Regime”.
