High Current Laboratory

Introduction

The High Current Laboratory (AP1), established by Cepel in 1981, performs tests for assessment of the electrical and thermo-mechanical performance of high, medium and low voltage equipment manufactured in Brazil and abroad. It is equipped to perform tests with electrical currents up to 230 kA.

Located in the Adrianópolis Unit, AP1 has a test area dimensioned for large equipment and an overhead crane able to move loads up to 3.2 tonnes.

Among the ongoing activities, internal arc tests in low voltage panels stand out. As internal electrical arcs are phenomena which generate risks for the operation of electricity distribution equipment, the tests performed in AP 1 allow the manufacturers of such equipment to include forms of protection when projecting their products and thus increase their safety.


Infrastructure

AP1 has a 50m wide, 10m long, 9m high area. The laboratory has facilities with 140 MVA short-circuit power up to 5 seconds and 21 MVA in steady-state, with voltages between 110 and 3500 V (three-phase) or between 110 and 6000 (single phase) in 60 Hz. Depending on the equipment being tested, it is possible to reach 230 kA efficient current during 5 seconds, or 50 KA steady-state current.


The laboratory is equipped with:
• 3 138 / 4.16 kV ± 20% transformers
• 3 4.16 / 0.137 to 1.65 kV transformers
• Ten 138 kV isolation switches
• Six 138 kV earthing isolation switches
• One 15 kV, 3150 A, 40 kA tripolar circuit breaker
• One 15 kV, 2000 A, 10 kA tripolar circuit breaker
• 3 5 kV, 1700 A, 10 kA synchronous bucks
• One shielded bus duct for 5kV
• Three reactor banks with 200, 100, 50, 25, 12.5, 6.4, 3.2, 1.6, 0.8, 0.4, 0.2, 0.1 and 0.05 Ω reactors in each bank
• Three reactor banks with 10, 5, 2.5, 1.25, 0.64, 0.32, 0.16, 0.08, 0.04, 0.02, 0.01 and 0.005 Ω reactors in each bank
• 3 resistor banks with 108 1.8Ω resistors in each bank
• 3 resistor banks with 6 4.911 mΩ resistors in each bank
• 1 three-phase full-wave bridge rectifier - 6 pulses.
